The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?

“My day typically involves marine survey activities, either offshore or desk-based. Offshore cases can be particularly challenging, requiring vessel visits, data collection, analysis, or on-site damage assessments. In contrast, my office work involves preparing reports, handling correspondence, and managing project-related tasks.

I also collaborate fully with our talented teams to ensure that we stay on track and meet our objectives. The dynamic nature of the maritime world, along with the interesting cases that require in-depth analysis, keeps me on my toes every day.”

What drew you to the maritime world and what keeps you passionate about it?

I’ve always been captivated by the marine engineering sector and the ocean—its vastness and its crucial role in global trade. The maritime industry uniquely blends cutting-edge technology, logistics, and international operations. What drives my passion is the continuous innovation within the sector and the essential role it plays in connecting nations and facilitating global trade.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Currently, I’m working on a case that involves developing a specific procedure for a vessel’s long-term lay-up. This project enables me to leverage my background experience while also acquiring new and interesting skills in procedure development.

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Dubai? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

The best part of being part of ABL Group is the team spirit. We work hard but also know how to have fun.

If you could change one thing about the maritime industry, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about the maritime industry, it would be to enhance the integration of digital technologies for more efficient and streamlined operations. While the industry has made progress in areas like automation and data analysis, there is still much room for improvement in terms of real-time monitoring and decision-making. Embracing these technologies would not only drive innovation but also make the industry more competitive and resilient in the long term.

Energy and marine consultancy ABL has been contracted by PGE & Ørsted to provide marine warranty survey (MWS) services to support the offshore construction of the 1.5 GW Baltica 2 offshore wind farm located in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.

Baltica 2, located 40 km offshore Poland in the Baltic Sea, will comprise of 107 x 14 MW wind turbine generators (WTGs) and four substations installed on monopile foundations. Once fully completed, the Baltica project is expected to provide enough renewable energy to power 2,5 million Polish homes, according to developers.

ABL’s scope of work covers the marine transportation and offshore installation (T&I) of the 107 WTGs. The project is expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2027.

Under the terms of the contract, ABL will provide technical review and approval of project documentation, drawings and calculations, marine assurance and risk services including vessel suitability surveys for the proposed fleet and DP trials where required, and also on-site attendance to review, approve and oversee all warranted operations.

“Along with our sister company OWC, who is based in Poland, we have significant experience in supporting the Baltic Sea’s offshore wind development in a number of capacities. This includes our work as MWS to support the construction of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind project and supporting more than 3 GW of potential offshore wind capacity with a range of engineering services, from technical advisory, cost engineering, geotechnical and GIS support.”

Tilo Klappenbach, ABL’s Country Manager in Germany

ABL’s operation in Hamburg, Germany, will manage the project. On-site attendances and vessel surveys will be supported by ABL’s wider European footprint, including ABL’s offices in Norway, Netherlands, France and UK. It may also draw on the specialised advisory and engineering consultancy expertise of OWC Poland, based out of offices in Warsaw and Gdansk.

“We will bring ABL’s global expertise in marine transportation and installation operations for offshore wind to support this important step in Poland’s offshore wind development. We combine the track-record, multi-disciplined marine and engineering expertise, and footprint across Northern Europe to execute this project.”

Adds Klappenbach

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL in Qatar. What keeps you on your toes?

“As the Country Manager, my day-to-day duties involves overseeing the team and our operations in Doha, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

A big part of my role is business development which is engaging with clients, understanding their needs, and delivering the high standards of service that ABL is known for.”

What drew you to the world of marine surveying and what keeps you passionate about it?

I’ve been in the industry for 18 years, and what initially drew me to marine surveying and keeps me passionate about it is the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the work. The marine industry presents constant challenges, which makes every day interesting and pushes me to stay sharp.

One area that has always fascinated me is rig moving. No two days are ever the same, especially when working in challenging environments and conditions. I also enjoy the tight-knit nature of the rig-moving industry. It’s a small community where you often cross paths with familiar faces, building strong professional relationships over the years.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I recently took over the role as Country in the Doha office, and have enjoyed working closely with the team here. Looking at how we, as a team can grow the business in Qatar has been especially interesting to me and understanding the wide range of services the ABL Group, as a whole can assist clients with. We have a great team in Qatar, so it’s a pleasure to work with them, and luckily they share my vision to grow, and adapt.

Looking ahead, what trends or opportunities do you see shaping the energy and ocean industries in Qatar?

“Qatar is quite buoyant at the moment, and there are many areas for growth in the Energy sector especially.

The move towards greener shipping will be  an exciting challenge to get involved in, in the next few years.”

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Doha? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

I particularly enjoyed meeting the Middle East and North Africa and South Asia(MENSAI) management team, at the regional management meeting in Dubai in December. Meeting everyone face to face, made dealing with everyone on a day to day basis, much more interesting, and pleasurable.

If you could change one thing about the maritime industry, what would it be and why?

I wouldn’t really change anything, as it’s a very dynamic and interesting sector to work in. New challenges and opportunities emerge on a daily basis.

ABL provides comprehensive through-life support for rig moving procedures for jack-up rigs, mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs) and all other types of rigs. Energy and marine consultancy ABL has been awarded a contract to provide marine warranty survey (MWS) services to Saipem, to support the marine transportation and installation (T&I) operations relating to Libya’s Bouri Gas Utilisation Project (BGUP).

The BGUP envisages an upgrade of offshore platforms and facilities at the Bouri gas field, which lies 120 kilometres northwest of Tripoli in 145 to 183 metres water depth. The upgrade will improve the field’s overall carbon footprint with significant reductions of its CO2 emissions.

Saipem has been awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for an approximately 5000 tonnes gas recovery model onto the existing DP4 offshore facility. The contract includes the laying of 28 kilometres of pipelines connecting the DP3, DP4 and Sabratha platforms.

Sergio Leone

“We are really pleased to be appointed to support Saipem on this project – following a long history of successful collaboration with the company. The BGUP project seeks to improve delivery and production of natural gas to Libya, with potential to supply further in North Africa. It is an important energy infrastructure project for North Africa as a whole.”

Sergio Leone, ABL’s MWS Project Manager and Business Development Manager

Under the terms of the contract, ABL will conduct technical reviews and approvals of all project documentation, drawings and calculations relating to warranted marine operations. The company’s scope of work also includes suitability surveys and other marine assurance deliverables relating to the proposed fleet, as well as potentially DP trials, where required. ABL will also provide on-site attendances to review and approve warranted marine operations.

The main heavy lift operations will be executed by Saipem’s semi-submersible crane vessel Saipem 7000.

“Whilst the project will be managed from our operational HQ in London, on-site attendances and vessel surveys will be supported by our extensive marine surveyor footprint across Europe and North Africa. We also benefit from an established market presence and MWS track-record in neighbouring Egypt.”
