The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL . What keeps you on your toes?

“As Regional Dynamic Positioning Lead at ABL, my role is always dynamic. One day, I’m conducting DP audits or FMEA studies; the next, I’m on an OVID inspection, offshore witnessing DP trials, meetings with Clients, etc..

Staying ahead of evolving technology and regulations keeps me on my toes, ensuring vessels operate safely and efficiently in complex offshore environments.

Ultimately, my goal is to enhance operational reliability and safety for our clients, whether it’s an oil and gas project or a renewables operation. Every day presents a new challenge, and that’s what makes this job so rewarding.”

What drew you to the maritime world and what keeps you passionate about it?

“I was born in Gijón, a beautiful city in the North of Spain with a deep maritime heritage, the sea has always been part of my life. This connection naturally led me to the maritime world, where technology and offshore operations constantly evolve.

What keeps me passionate is the challenge of ensuring safe and efficient vessel operations, knowing that our work directly impacts the industry and those who depend on it.”

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Right now, I’m focused on growing our DP assurance services in the region by emphasizing quality, knowledge, experience, and honesty. The biggest challenge—and the most exciting part—is demonstrating to vessel owners and oil majors that thorough and transparent onboard testing is the key to ensuring safety in DP operations. It’s a rewarding effort, as building trust through expertise and integrity is what truly makes a difference in the industry.

Looking ahead, how do you see advancements in Dynamic Positioning contributing to a more sustainable future for the energy and maritime industries

“Advancements in DP technology are playing a key role in reducing fuel consumption and emissions, making offshore operations more energy-efficient. Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Dubai? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

The best part of being in ABL Dubai is the team spirit—we’re a diverse group with a shared passion for the maritime industry. Whether it’s collaborating on challenging projects or enjoying team outings, there’s always a great energy. Each and every single day you can have fun, having a coffee with any of my lovely team, not only from Dubai, but also Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain – KSA teams, which I do collaborate a lot and use to catch up several times during the year. The funniest moment is always the UAE Christmas Party, it always become an unforgettable evening where all together have good fun, really.

If you could change one thing about the maritime industry, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about the maritime industry, it would be to restore the respect and recognition that seafarers deserve. They are the backbone of global trade and offshore operations, yet their invaluable contributions are often overlooked. Ensuring better working conditions, fair treatment, and appreciation for their expertise would not only benefit them but also strengthen the entire industry.

As we mark International Women’s Day this week, we’re celebrating the remarkable women at ABL Group who are shaping the future of our industry. Among them is Jani Viljoen, Marine Surveyor and a nominee for the Top 100 Women in Shipping. With a career built on hard work and a drive to push boundaries, Jani plays a key role in supporting safe and sustainable maritime operations in Bahrain and across the globe.

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?

A day in the Bahrain office is quite diverse. Some days, I’m on-site completing surveys or attending specific jobs, while other days involve desktop work, meetings, and technical administrative tasks. With our small team of 11 in the ABL Bahrain office, everyone covers a range of tasks and assists where needed. This variety ensures that no two days are ever the same, keeping me on my toes and continuously learning.

What drew you to the world of marine surveying and what keeps you passionate about it?

“I have always had a passion for the ocean, marine operations, and understanding how things are fixed and broken. With a background in Mechanical Engineering, marine surveying provided the perfect opportunity to combine my interests and expertise.

The uniqueness of each job and the continuous learning in this field keep me engaged. There are always new scenarios and challenges, making it an ever-evolving and exciting career.”

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I am currently finishing my Master’s degree in Renewable Engineering, which has been both challenging and exciting. I recently completed my first solo MWS attendance for loading a drilling rig onto a Heavy Lift vessel.

Congratulations on your nomination for the Top 100 Women in Shipping! How does it feel to receive such recognition, and what does it mean to you personally and professionally?

I am incredibly grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to be nominated for such an achievement. The nomination confirms the hard work I’ve put in, especially in a region where females are rarely seen in the maritime industry. Professionally, it sets new goals and brings excitement for the future.

This accomplishment is due to the fantastic examples, motivation, and support from ABL, my family, and mentors. ABL truly exemplifies inclusivity and the drive to nurture the next generation.

While the Gulf Arab states are known for their major oil and gas production, we have noticed a shift towards supporting global efforts to achieve net-zero goals. The ABL Bahrain/KSA office is aiming to diversify into a wider range of sectors. ABL in the region is well-positioned to bridge the gap between the oil & gas, marine and renewable industries. This shift is bringing forward new and exciting opportunities.

If you could change one thing about the maritime industry, what would it be and why?

In Saudi Arabia (where most of our operations take place) females face significant limitations offshore as we are not allowed in certain ports and cannot stay offshore overnight. Despite the slow evolution in KSA, there is still a pressing need for change to provide equal opportunities for women in the maritime industry.

What advice would you offer to young women aspiring to build a successful career in the maritime industry?

Be a sponge in every room you enter—experience is the most valuable resource, and knowledge builds confidence. As women in a predominantly male industry, celebrate your unique perspectives and strengths. Use these to innovate and lead with confidence. Your diverse background is an asset that can drive change and progress in the industry.

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Seef?

The people. ABL Bahrain is a close-knit team who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves when the work needs to be done. As a South African working abroad, the team makes Bahrain feel like home, especially when the Rugby is playing

Sritama Sarkar, Principal Pipeline Engineer, ABL Group

As we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science this February, we shine a spotlight on the remarkable journey of a woman making waves in subsea and offshore engineering.

From an early fascination with oceans to becoming a respected voice in a traditionally male-dominated field, Sritama Sarkar’s story exemplifies how passion and determination can overcome gender barriers in science.

“Water always fascinated me, particularly oceans, which are a vast source of resources,” she reflects. “I was always curious to know how such resources could be used in a responsible and sustainable manner.” This curiosity would shape her career path in subsea and offshore engineering.

Working as the Principal Pipeline Engineer at ABL Group, Sritama splits her time between oil and gas projects whilst increasingly engaging with renewables – a testament to the evolving energy landscape. Her vision extends beyond current technologies: “I would like to see cleaner and sustainable sources of energy in my lifetime,” she shares, highlighting her commitment to environmental stewardship.

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. “Working in a male-dominated world, I often found it hard to speak up in meetings where I would be the only female,” she admits. However, she found strength through mentorship from women who had navigated similar challenges before her.

Her message to aspiring female scientists is clear and powerful. She emphasises that girls excel at problem-solving and managing multiple aspects simultaneously – skills that are invaluable in scientific careers. When addressing common misconceptions, she tackles gender stereotypes head-on: “There is a common misconception that women aren’t as dedicated to their careers as men. However, women in science can be as passionate and dedicated as their male colleagues. Work-life balance is a personal choice and should not be related to gender.”

For Sritama, the most rewarding aspect of applied science is its real-world impact. Whether developing new technologies, creating analysis tools, or designing sustainable solutions, her work considers not just human needs but planetary wellbeing as a whole.

To girls contemplating a future in science, she points to the inspiring legacy of women who have made significant contributions to physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Their achievements stand as a testament to what’s possible, paving the way for the next generation of female scientists to push boundaries and break new ground.

Sritama’s journey is just one of many inspiring stories of women making an impact in science and engineering at ABL Group. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing more experiences from our talented women, highlighting their challenges, achievements, and contributions to the industry.

Follow along on our social media to hear their stories!

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL ?

“My day at ABL involves managing projects in my pipeline, supporting my team and clients worldwide, and preparing materials for potential opportunities. I stay informed about upcoming projects, connect with industry peers and decision-makers, and ensure ABL is well-positioned to win new work.

I also advise prospective clients on optimising their operations to maximise value, often leading to opportunities to provide operational support throughout the lifecycle of their assets”

What inspired you to join your industry?

From as early as I can remember, I aspired to be an engineer, imagining myself crafting solutions to tackle the world’s major challenges. Over time, I realised progress in the real world often comes in small, incremental steps rather than ground-breaking leaps. This shift in perspective taught me to appreciate the process of making ideas tangible, even if imperfect.

Success is about making things work, solving implementation challenges, and embracing the journey. This realisation and satisfaction inspired me to join this industry and continues to fuel my passion today.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

ABL is serving as the marine warranty surveyor for the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project, overseeing the installation of a high-voltage DC (HVDC) line beneath the Hudson River to transport power from Canada to New York. My role involves monitoring the pull-in of the HVDC line from the seafloor onto land, ensuring it meets design parameters and addressing operational challenges.

The project’s complexity goes beyond engineering, scheduling was adjusted to protect a nearby bald eagle nesting site, and operations were carried out in sub-zero temperatures. What makes a project like this exciting is that solutions must be crafted around real environmental and operational constraints. Despite the challenges thrown our way, we developed ingenious solutions to make the project a success.

What do you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in the USA ?

The energy and oceans sectors in the USA are on a growth trajectory, driven by rising consumer demand and government initiatives promoting industrial development. While tariffs and other microeconomic shifts may create short-term disruptions, the outlook for US ports remains positive, with projected growth of around 2%, according to Moody’s ratings.

In high-density states, there’s a growing push to shift goods transport from roads to rivers, utilising waterways as highways. This creates opportunities for ABL to collaborate with port operators on developing efficient, future-ready facilities. Despite political noise, US infrastructure projects are often shaped by practical regulations. For example, while national policies may waver, FEMA guidelines still require climate change considerations for new structures, ensuring data-driven decisions prevail where it matters most.

What do you enjoy most so far about working as part of the ABL Group team in Houston?

The Houston office feels like a family, and the camaraderie here makes work even more enjoyable. We celebrate the little moments, like Auntrell’s daughter exploring classic film photography, Nicholas sharing stories of his family’s trip to witness a Tesla booster landing, or Ivan’s tales of near hole-in-ones on the golf course. There’s always something to laugh about, whether it’s reminiscing with David Ballads about solving problems from decades ago or simply catching up on life.

It’s a team that’s deeply connected, both personally and professionally, making every day rewarding and fun.

What can we expect from the ports and terminals market in the USA this year?

2025 looks promising for the ports and terminals market, with increased government spending in energy and infrastructure creating new opportunities. While some renewable energy projects may face delays, deregulation could encourage private investment and innovation in the sector. A key focus will be on advancing already funded projects that face challenges like resource competition, particularly for skilled engineering contractors. As technical partners, ABL will play a vital role in helping stakeholders develop effective solutions to bring these projects to completion.

We also anticipate the growing role of AI in infrastructure, potentially driving efficiency in areas like data center placement in natural cooling environments such as oceans or streams. ABL is actively engaging with government and industry partners to collaborate on these forward-thinking initiatives.

With strong potential for growth, ABL is well-positioned to expand its presence in the ports and terminals sector, taking on exciting development projects across the United States.

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL ?

“My day-to-day work at ABL involves collaborating with my team on projects, problem-solving, and ensuring tasks align with company goals.

It’s a mix of meetings, independent work, and adapting to challenges while staying focused on delivering results.”

What inspired you to join your industry?

I have been a seafarer for about 15 years and the passion and connection with sea inspired me to take up this job. Working on onshore and offshore projects keeps me engaged and excited to take up new challenges every day.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now

Every job that we handle is unique and comes with its own set of challenges. Currently, the de-commissioning work that we are handling on the west coast of India is quite interesting and exciting.

What do you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in India?

India has tremendous potential to lead the way in renewable energy. With a focus onshore wind, tidal power, offshore and sustainable marine resources, we can drive growth while preserving ecosystems. It’s an exciting time for energy and marine initiatives in the country.

Why should people join us on stand at Maritime India 2025?

Visiting our stand at Maritime India 2025 is more than just discovering what we do. It is an opportunity to collaborate, address industry challenges, explore innovative solutions, and contribute to shaping the future of the maritime industry in India and internationally.

What do you enjoy most so far about working as part of the ABL Group team in Mumbai?

One of the best parts of working with the ABL Group team in Mumbai is the vibrant and supportive team. We also know how to balance work and fun whether it’s celebrating with team lunches, participating in office challenges, or bonding over coffee breaks.
