We are happy to announce the successful completion of ABL’s inaugural Vessel Operations Course – part of our global maritime familiarisation course programme to support industry stakeholders. This three-day event aimed to provide participants from the world of hull & machinery (H&M), P&I and maritime law, with a unique insight into the operations of a working merchant vessel.

The course took place on the DFDS cruise ferry KING SEAWAYS, a 31,788 GT vessel with a capacity of 2,280 passengers. It departed Newcastle on the 11th of June, travelling to Amsterdam and returning back to Newcastle on the 13th of June.

“This was a brilliant course. It was very informative and I also met lots of great new people.”

About ABL’s Vessel Operations Course

Over the course of the programme, 12 delegates from across maritime insurance and law firms, had a chance to observe the cruise ferry arrival and departure procedures, experiencing the bridge and engine room. Delegates heard from the chief officer about deck and navigational operations and from the engineers on maintenance and engine room operations. Additionally, the participants toured the operational areas of the vessels and participated in classroom style technical lectures delivered by ABL’s maritime consultants, Paul Martin and Paul Johnston.

“Great course, ideal number of attendees allowing for good interaction. Knowledgeable, friendly and professional course leaders.”

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL?

At ABL, every day is different bringing new challenges – but this is what is great about the job. I work with various clients to deliver engineering and consulting services to support and de-risk their operations.  With the company covering such a broad spectrum of services and with the team being so knowledgeable there are many opportunities to learn something new and develop as an individual. Saying that I always look for new opportunities to grow through my day-to-day activities.

What inspired you to join your industry?

My father played a huge role in my interest in the industry being involved in the industry himself. He firstly got me interested in engineering by always inviting me to observe and help when he was maintaining our car. Then, before completing high school, he talked to me about a career at seas and when I looked into it, I was fully drawn to it. I decided to study at Merchant Marine Higher Education, we called Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran (STIP) at Jakarta. After graduation I became a seaman. Middle of the year 2021 around July, I decided to work onshore and become a marine surveyor, firstly as a freelance and recently joining ABL.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I’m currently working on DP trials with our DP manager from ABL Singapore, gaining new skills in this type of survey and expanding our capabilities in Dynamic Positioning for our Indonesian operations. I was also part of our recent ABL Familiarisation course by the Singapore office, coordinating with brokers and underwriters to a very successful course.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Indonesia?

The maritime sector in the Asia Pacific region and Indonesia specifically has been making significant strides after the pandemic. We saw the agenda of Singapore Maritime Week being dominated by decarbonisation and green initiatives – a very promising development for the future of energy and oceans in the area.

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of this year’s Singapore Marine Familiarisation Course. This two-day course, conducted in collaboration with ST Engineering Marine – Tuas Yard Singapore, aimed to introduce marine insurance professionals to the practical and technical aspects of ship damage repairs, salvage techniques, and cyber security in the maritime industry.

The event commenced at the ABL offices in Singapore, where participants were welcomed by the ABL directors. The first day’s agenda included a comprehensive presentation on dealing with engine room flooding, followed by a tour of the ST Engineering Marine Tuas Road Shipyard. Participants had the opportunity to observe the shipyard’s advanced capabilities in ship repairs & conversions. The tour provided valuable insights into the intricate maintenance and upgrade processes of various vessels, including dredgers and specialised subsea support vessels.

The second day featured two comprehensive presentations, the first on the future of marine alternative fuels and the decarbonisation push within the maritime sector, followed by cyber security challenges faced in the maritime sector, underscoring the importance of protecting maritime operations in today’s digital age. Following this, participants enjoyed a networking lunch and a tour of Singapore Port and Anchorages on a yacht. This segment provided an in-depth look at one of the world’s busiest and most strategic ports, showcasing its container transshipment operations and extensive anchorage activities.

The programme concluded with a debrief and Q&A session, where participants shared their experiences and insights gained over the two days. The positive feedback highlighted the programme’s effectiveness in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

In 2021, Singapore Port ranked as the world’s busiest container transshipment port, handling approximately 2,000 merchant ships daily. The anchorage around Singapore hosts over 300 vessels at any time, making it a critical hub for global maritime activities. Our collaboration with ST Engineering Marine, a premier shipyard renowned for its customised shipbuilding and repair services, was integral to the success of this programme.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants from Singapore, China and Malaysia for their enthusiastic involvement. Special thanks to the ABL team and ST Engineering Marine for their dedicated support.

We look forward to continuing our efforts in providing top-notch training and fostering collaboration within the maritime industry.

LOC in collaboration with Drydocks World, Dubai, the international service provider to the shipping, offshore, oil, gas and energy sectors have launched a new training course for professionals working in the maritime industry in Dubai and the wider Middle East.

The Ship and Ship Repair Facility Familiarisation Training Course, has been developed to give a valuable first-hand knowledge of different aspects of the industry, including a practical understanding of deep sea and offshore units, ship repair facilities and port operations.

The first course which runs in March, will be open to professionals who have no direct experience of ships or ship repair facilities, but have indirect dealings with these important facilities through their job roles.

The new Ship and Ship Repair Familiarization Training Course is two and half days of practical experience structured around presentations by experienced mariners, engineers, surveyors and ship repair experts.  The course will include tours of ships, oil rigs, working ports and the largest ship repair facility in the Middle East.

Andrew Squire, Chief Executive, LOC says;

‘LOC has developed a strong reputation and large client base throughout the UAE and MENA region, since its establishment in 1991 in Dubai.

‘Increasingly our clients are asked about the possibility of providing their staff with practical experience of visiting working vessels, but unfortunately as port facilities are highly sensitive, secure areas, this is not easily arranged.

‘However, based on our excellent working relationship with Drydocks World, spanning nearly 25 years, we approached the company and asked for their help.

‘The scale of Drydocks World’s repair facilities, which are the largest in the Middle East, and the different types of ships undergoing conversion and repair along with the highly specialised new builds will provide the course delegates with a fascinating, diverse experience that will benefit their career professional development.

‘We thank Drydocks World for their support, and believe that this will be an essential course for all professionals in the region wanting to develop their maritime knowledge and demonstrate their commitment to CPD and to increasing their professional knowledge.’

The first Ship and Ship Repair Facility Familiarisation Training Course will take place on 21 March 2016, to register your interest in this or future courses please email jamie.simpson@loc-group.com.

The course attendees may work for insurance brokers, marine underwriters, P&I Clubs, vessel charterers and brokers, port authorities and terminal operators, reinsurers, banks and financial institutions, cargo freight forwarders and cargo owners, ship owners and managers, maritime lawyers and law firm employees, marine surveyors and journalists.
